april news

Hello again!!!

This must be a record, two posts in quick sucession!!! At the moment I am sitting at our good friend Spooners house in Ireland, relaxing after leaving France the other day. Its nice to catch up though both Dom and I are missing skiing already!!! It was a fantastic season, we met and worked for some awesome people and our skiing and boarding improved to no end. We're looking forward to December already when we return to run the same chalet and get back on the snow.

On the downside, in the second to last week of the season, on a massive sunny day in La Plagne I broke my thumb and have subsequently spent the rest of the season in a cast with numerous trips to the doctors and an operation the day before we left to have my bone pinned back together. It was a pretty scary experience, especially with my limited French, but im ok. Getting better at doing things with 1 hand every day :) Poor Dom has to pick up a bit of slack though - including doing ALL the driving on our 1000km trip across France to get the ferry to Ireland!!! What a legend!

Next planned for us is 3 days here then off to the uk to meet up with nick and jules from the ski season and back off to France with them to work on a campsite in Brittany. Not sure where yet, but we find out on training at the start of May. As long as there is beach and sun i'm not too fussed where we end up. Will keep you posted.

Lots of love till then xx Claire and Dom

march news

Sorry for the lack of contact, this email was written a while ago now but I have been unable to post it up due to some problem with my photos which I’ve now sorted, phew! So, old news but better than no news eh :)
ENJOY

The season end is nearing and we are trying to get in as much skiing as possible. Unfortunately though, today Dom and I have decided to sit it out to vege out. Fantastic. The long season, late nights and early mornings plus excessive daily exercise have taken their toll. I’m just plain knackered and Doms back is playing up a bit. It’s actually nice to just sit and chill and the weather isn’t ideal so that makes me feel even more justified to be lazy. There’s lots of grey clouds and flat light…looks like more snow is coming – woohoo!!!

The snow out here has just gone crazy, after weeks of guests upon guests complaining about the lack of it (we went 3 ½ icy weeks without a drop of it), they are now complaining that there is too much and when are we going to get some nice clear blue skies?? You can’t please anyone round here!!! Admittedly it has been a bit of snow overload and we’ve not been able to get out everyday lately, but all we can think about, as seasonaires, is the massive base that’s being set up for the rest of the season! Wicked!!! Busy tourist season is winding up here too so the new snow shouldn’t get too thrashed…we hope!!!

Couple of photos from up on the ski field and by our house – see there’s plenty of snow, and an amazing view!!!
Unfortunately, the amount of snow has been causing a bit of havoc for people round here…Dom did a airport transfer to Geneva last weekend that should have been a round trip of 5 ½ hours but instead it was 13! Guttered! Also people going to Val D’Isere were trapped going in and out of the resort due to 2 avalanches over the road. Scary stuff. All you hear up here in the mornings are bombs going off to settle the snow, the avalanche risk is at the highest possible level at the moment. There was a close call yesterday (captured by one of our friends on video tape) The pisters set off 5 bombs to dislodge snow quite high on the mountain, but the whole top of one of the glaciers came down, sending a huge avalanche and massive snow clouds down the mountain, stopping only a couple of hundred metres from a main ski slope. We are glad we weren’t in the area at the time!!

On the whole, not too much else has been happening out here. Recently we had a big patch of time with heaps of friends and family out her to visit us and the couple we live with (nick and jules). It was great to see everyone though thoroughly exhausting - trying to be as quick as possible at work to get home to them and up the mountain to ski with them – worth it though!

I also have my cousin Simon coming out to visit on the 25th of March so I’m really looking forward to that! Hopefully my foot will be better by then and I can teach him to board. My fingers are crossed that Dom will take the opportunity to learn to board at the same time too, I’m going to keep working on him!!! Maybe he’ll convert to the good side when he sees how fun it is???

Anyway, here’s a few shots dedicated to those who have come and the great times had by us all.

Anyway, that’s all I can think of to say for now so will leave you there.

PS - a couple of blooper shots to laugh at. Even though we’ve been skiing for months now, we are by no means perfect!!! Ha ha.

On an even funnier note, here are the employees of ski hiver, all dressed up for our mountain pub crawl, race for charity. It was a hilarious day, julz and I dressed as ghosts (or arabs as many thought) made for interesting skiing – specially when we got out shains caught round our skis and poles!!! The others were sooo funny too as people just thought they were dressed normally! There are so many crazy 1-pieces on the mountain, some people have no fashion sense!
